For many hundreds of years in Ireland there has been the superstition of The Banshee. Even when I was a child it was said that just when someone was about to die a wailing screech would be heard at night. If you walked outside and looked into the far distance you would be considered unfortunate because it was an unsettling vision, you would see an old hag with long black hair. If a person saw the vision the death would be impending. The Banshee could be seen coming her hair, crying and wailing as she did so. Many times I have met people who insist that they heard this wailing just before someone they knew had died.
It is said that The Banshee has a stronger influence in certain families. There are certain surnames that are associated with The Banshee. These families are guaranteed to have a vision of The Banshee before a death. The Banshee is said in these cases to be mourning a death that has not yet occurred.
The Banshee is said to use a comb to comb her hair as she wails. Consequently it is a sign of bad luck to find a comb on a road or a field.
